Who doesn’t like to watch a movie at the comfort of their home? Have your popcorn, snacks, everything at your reach and enjoy the movie to the fullest. But have we ever introspected that we have slowly shifted from watching movies in theatres to watching it online or OTT platforms. The online movie watching comfort has also made us somehow take the theatres for granted and not value its essence.
For online movies, the only thing we have to do is get a subscription for a stipulated period of time and watch as many movies as we want without traveling an inch. Whereas for movies in the theatres, we have to pre-plan, travel to a theatre, book tickets and make necessary arrangements. Why wouldn’t one opt for something more comfortable than all the hassle anyway?
The rise of online movies:
If we try to think, the major rise and the case of online movies practically began during the “lockdown” phase in 2020 when we had no choice but to stay at our homes 24/7 and binge watch movies, sitcoms or daily soaps either on the TV or online on our OTT platforms. It so happened that even the movies that were supposed to release on the big screen started releasing on the OTTs. This flooded the number of online movie watchers and even after the lockdown was lifted, the number of online movie watchers did not decrease drastically.
The Pros of the online platform:
- Cost efficient: The average cost per subscription of an OTT platform would range form Rupees 100 to Rupees 150 per month, for “N” number of movies or web series that one wants to binge watch whereas a movie ticket at the theatres would cost Rupees 200 per movie.
- Anytime, anywhere : The fact that one can view digital content at the comfort of their home or even anywhere else say while traveling and at their convenient time or even watch it offline after downloading.
- Everything is at your control: You really want to watch a particular movie but it has released long ago and is off the theatres now. What do you do ? You log into your OTT account and watch the movie that you want to. You don’t like the movie you’re watching ? Remove it from your list and start another. This feature sadly isn’t available in theatres. When we enter for a movie, we unfortunately can only walk out of the theatre at the most but then our money goes to waste.
